Obituary: Jon Noel Santemma, 79, Lawyer, Active Community Member
Apr 10, 2018Santemma passed away on Monday, Sept. 25 after fighting a valiant battle against cancer at age 79. He was surrounded by his loved ones at the time of his passing.Jon was born on December 24, 1937 to Dr. Esterino and Emilie Santemma in Hempstead NY. He attended Chaminade High School in Mineola, Cornell University and Fordham Law School. He was an active alumnus of each academic institution.Jon is survived by his loving wife, Carol, their beloved daughter Jessica (Neil Jones), his four older children, Suzanne, Deborah, Jon and Christopher, daughter-in-law Jennifer Okin, his son-in-law Charles Pergler, his four amazing grandchildren, Jon, Grace, Gabrielle and Lyla, his devoted sister-in-law Dr. Virginia Maurer and her sister Lynne Maurer Lubling, two loving brothers-in-law Gary and John Hoffman, several beloved nieces and nephews from New Hampshire to Miami, with special mention of his nephew Nick Hoffman, who is currently serving our country abroad, and many longtime and devoted friends.Jon began his stellar career as a law secretary to the Hon. Howard T. Hogan, Administrative Judge of Nassau County, where he was assigned to condemnation and tax certiorari matters.This was the beginning of an illustrious law career, wherein Jon became the pre-eminent expert in tax certiorari and condemnation law. Jon concluded his distinguished career serving as Counsel to the firm of Farrell Fritz in Uniondale, New York where he delighted in the collegiality of the finest lawyers he ever met.Jon edited and co-authored the 2005 book, Condemnation Law and Procedures in New York, as well as the 2000 supplement to the Review and Reduction of Real Estate Taxes in NY. He was a trustee of the Incorporated Village of Laurel Hollow and from 1979 to 1980, he served as president of the Nassau County Bar Association and chaired its building expansion committee. Jon was also a fellow of the New York State Bar Association. He chaired the condemnation and tax certiorari committees of both the NYSBA and the NCBA.
